The effects of smoking on the mental health are:

- Depression
- Social isolation
- Insomnia
- Lower IQ
- Asthma
- Respiratory diseases

Researchers are of the opinion that the NNK causes the immune cells of the brain to attack healthy cells and not the unhealthy cells. This damage is caused by tobacco whether smoked or chewed. Passive or secondary smoking also carries NNK which may also cause nerve damage or brain damage.

The unborn are also affected by passive smoking or maternal smoking and this may lead to an under developed brain in addition to increased risk for ear infections, asthma and other respiratory diseases in the new-born baby. Tobacco has harmful elements which are injurious to our health in more ways than one.

The effects of smoking on the physical health are:

- Respiratory and non-respiratory problems
- Lowered lung functions
- Reduced rate of lung growth
- Heart diseases
- Stroke
- Increased chances of lung cancer
- Lowered physical activity
- Tooth decay and discoloration
- Short of breath
While some of the consequences from smoking may be permanent, a smoker’s health can improve slowly upon quitting the cigarette. Within 20 minutes of a smoker refusing the next cigarette, the damage to his body begins to repair.

Second-hand smoke also known as passive smoking, can harm bystanders or people nearby. The effects of passive smoking can range from eye irritation, headaches, and nausea to risk of cancer and heart diseases. The effects of passive smoking on young children include an elevated risk of respiratory infections. A pregnant woman who smokes affects the physical and mental physical development of her unborn child. The infant of a parent who smokes is at greater risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Not only does smoking increase a persons’ chances of developing lung cancer but several other cancers that include lip, oral, pharynx, esophagus, larynx, pancreas, cervix, bladder, and kidney. The effects of smoking on the body can also include emphysema, heart attack, underweight newborn children, miscarriage, stroke, cataracts, and impotence.

The affects of smoking are many and the list is endless. Smoking lowers the quality of life physically and mentally with all the bad effects it carries. It downgrades your life from what you used to be socially and maybe permanently. In the interest of your physical, social and psychological life, it is best to quit this habit before it ruins your life completely.

Everyone understands what cigarette smoking can do to you and the serious illnesses it causes, but people have become brainwashed,to the point they believe it will not happen to them. Until it does. Its only now that the social acceptence of smoking is changing. this is reflected in numerous laws banning smoking in public places and the ever increasing taxation on cigarettes.Beating your addiction means being able to stand up and say no when cigarettes are offered to you. This is difficult and requires a lot of willpower but if you have help from smoking patches the task is made that much easier.
